The Ford Fusion has been an IIHS Top Safety Pick for a long time, shining as a paragon of driver and passenger protection in the sedan segment since 2009. When the IIHS began conducting the small-overlap-front crash test in 2012, many models that had been considered safe suddenly saw their Top Safety Pick rating lost due to poor scores in the new category.

Not Fusion.

Though the 2013 Ford Fusion didn't earn the IIHS's top rating, good, it was rated as acceptable. It kept its Top Safety Pick-status until last year, when the IIHS tightened up the requirements for the award.

Never to fear -- the 2017 Fusion has been redesigned to be safer than ever, and meet or exceed all of the IIHS's most stringent standards. With a good rating in all five crashworthiness categories, including the small-overlap, and an upgraded Pre-Collision Assist system that can prevent and reduce the speed of accidents, it got its groove back and received an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ again this year.
